Montana Department of Commerce Announces Grants to Support Main Street Businesses

MONTANA – Montana Department of Commerce Director Pam Haxby-Cote today announced $726,584 in economic development grants to assist Main Street businesses across Montana with creating 93 jobs, providing workforce training and developing plans for growth and expansion.

“Montana’s entrepreneurs and small businesses are the core of our strong economy,” said Director Haxby-Cote. “Supporting their growth through proven economic development programs will continue to drive Montana’s economy and create opportunities for our workforce across the state.”

The funds are being awarded through the Big Sky Economic Development Trust Fund (BSTF) and the Primary Sector Workforce Training Grant (WTG) programs at the Department of Commerce, Office of Tourism and Business Development.

BSTF provides state funds to promote long-term stable economic growth in Montana through two categories: job creation and planning. More information can be found at www.bstf.mt.gov.

Big Sky Economic Development Trust Fund (BSTF) – Job Creation

  • Lake County received $82,500 of BSTF Job Creation funds to assist Ronan Telephone Company dba Access Montana to expand, which will allow the company to create 11 new jobs within the first year. The BSTF funds will be used for purchase of equipment and wage reimbursement. Ronan Telephone Company is a locally owned rural telecommunications provider for the area. 
  • Missoula County received $45,000 of BSTF Job Creation funds to assist Tru-Home Montana, LLC to expand, which will allow the company to create 6 new jobs within the first year in Missoula County. The BSTF funds will be used for purchase of equipment, lease rate reduction and wage reimbursement. Tru-Home Montana, LLC is a Missoula-based designer and manufacturer of pre-built homes. This startup business hopes to serve a five-state region and western Canada.
  • Missoula County received $53,100 of BSTF Job Creation funds to assist Synema Studios, LLC to expand, which will allow the company to create 9 new jobs within the first year in Missoula County. The BSTF funds will be used for purchase of equipment, software and furnishings and for lease rate reduction and wage reimbursement. Synema Studios, LLC is a Missoula-based video production studio that distributes online content.
  • Ravalli County received $180,000 of BSTF Job Creation funds to assist White River Contracting LLC dba Rocky Mountain Homes to expand, which will allow the company to create 24 new jobs within the first year in Ravalli County. The BSTF funds will be used for purchase of equipment and construction supplies. White River Contracting, LLC, which is located in Hamilton, is a vertically integrated design build and manufacturing company that controls every aspect of the construction and development process, from raw wood through living structure.
  • Gallatin County received $112,700 of BSTF Job Creation funds to assist Motorcoach Maintenance and Truck Repair of Montana, Inc. to expand, which will allow the company to create 23 new jobs within the first year in Gallatin County. The BSTF funds will be used for purchase of equipment and construction supplies. Motorcoach Maintenance and Truck Repair of Montana, Inc., which is located in Belgrade, is an independent, family-owned and full-service repair and maintenance shop.

Big Sky Economic Development Trust Fund (BSTF) – Planning

  • Snowy Mountain Development Corporation received $7,750 of BSTF Planning funds to assist County Seat Café with a feasibility study. County Seat Café is a startup higher-end restaurant that will be located in the historic Megahertz building in Lewistown.
  • Prospera Business Network received $27,000 of BSTF Planning funds to assist Foundant Technologies, Inc. with schematic designs, design development and construction documents for the construction of a new building in Bozeman. Foundant provides a powerful online system for grant makers, grant seekers and community foundations. 
  • Montana Business Assistance Connection, Inc. received $16,200 of BSTF Planning funds to assist the City of Helena with the creation of a Tax Increment Finance District for its downtown area.
  • Montana Business Assistance Connection, Inc. received $23,034 of BSTF Planning funds to assist the Helena School District with the completion of an economic opportunities and preliminary architectural report for the vacant 7th Avenue Gym building, which is adjacent to the Central School campus in Helena.
  • Kootenai River Development Council, Inc. received $13,500 of BSTF Planning funds to assist Lincoln County Port Authority with a planning report that will allow the Port Authority to submit an application to the BNSF Premier Parks, Sites and Transloads program.
  • Headwaters RC&D Area, Inc. received $27,000 of BSTF Planning funds to assist Adams Consulting, LLC with a feasibility study for the purchase and renovations of the Finley Hotel and Complex in Butte.

Primary Sector Workforce Training Grant Program

  • Avitus Group, Inc. received $83,800 of WTG funds to train 20 new full-time jobs. Avitus Group Inc., which is located in Billings, handles human resources, health care administration, accounting and other back office functions for large and small businesses.
  • Ronan Telephone Company dba Access Montana received $55,000 of WTG funds to train 11 new full-time jobs. Ronan Telephone Company is a locally owned rural telecommunications provider for the area.
