HELENA, Mont. – Officials at the Montana Department of Commerce and the Montana District of the U.S. Small Business Administration are reminding Montana residents to support local businesses this Saturday and throughout the season while shopping for the holidays.

Small Business Saturday, which falls on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, is a national movement to shift some of the impact from holiday shopping events like Black Friday into state and local economies. In Montana, it’s an opportunity to support more than 30,000 main street businesses.

“Small businesses account for more than 99 percent of businesses in Montana, so they’re truly the lifeblood of the state’s economy,” Commerce Director Pam Haxby-Cote said. “Supporting our local entrepreneurs is important year-round, and the holiday season is a great opportunity to show our support in full force.”

According to the Montana SBA, approximately 41 percent of hourly-wage and salary jobs in Montana are with businesses employing fewer than 20 people, and 75 percent are with businesses employing fewer than 100 people.

“The American economy has always been driven by the entrepreneurial nature of its citizens, and that is also true here in Montana,” said Montana SBA District Director Wayne Gardella. These hard-working entrepreneurs create jobs for our families, bring in dollars to our economy and further the development of this state. Let’s reflect on this and thank a small business owner for all the good they do for Montana.”

American Express, which started Small Business Saturday in 2010, says last year’s event earned small business owners an estimated $15.4 billion.
