MONTANA – Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney and Commerce Director Pam Haxby-Cote today marked a milestone alongside a Helena family on the completion of their rehabilitated home funded in-part by Habitat for Humanity and the Montana Board of Housing.

The Bixby family will move into the home after Habitat staff and volunteers spent nearly 860 hours rehabbing it. After years as renters, the family will be able to purchase their like-new home with a low-interest mortgage through the Montana Board of Housing.

“Becoming a homeowner gives us a sense of relief, security, and peace of mind for the future of our kids,” Holly Bixby said. “Don’t ever give up; be patient and persistent until the end. You’ll learn a lot about yourself along the way.”

During today’s Key Ceremony, Lt. Gov Cooney congratulated the Bixby family.

“Today’s ceremony is an important reminder of the hard work volunteers and families put into strengthening our communities.” Lt. Gov. Cooney said, “Our communities and economy are stronger when hard-working families like the Bixby’s have an affordable place to call home.”

The Montana Board of Housing partners with local Habitat affiliates to create affordable housing opportunities. This partnership means qualified families will pay no more than 30 percent of their gross monthly income for housing.

Since 1998, the Montana Department of Commerce’s Board of Housing has provided funding for 134 Habitat loans for approximately $11 million.
