New Tourism Marketing Campaign Promotes Indian Country in Montana

HELENA, Mont. – The Department of Commerce is amplifying its efforts to promote tribal tourism with a new marketing campaign designed to inspire potential visitors from out of state to come and experience Indian Country firsthand.

“The rich culture and history of tribal nations is an integral part of the Montana experience,” said Commerce Director Pam Haxby-Cote. “Marketing campaigns such as this will encourage visitors to bring the positive economic impacts of tourism into tribal communities and reservations.”

Animated banner ads running in the travel section of National Geographic’s website highlight the heritage, tradition and culture of Indian Country.

The ads point to the state’s official travel website at VisitMT.com, which has been updated with new content for Indian Country.

Commerce selected National Geographic because its audience of 24 million visitors per month aligns with the department’s target audience of educated travelers who enjoy learning about art, culture and history.

According to a national survey commissioned by Commerce last year, 82 percent of leisure travelers expressed interest in exploring sites and experiences related to Native American culture and history. Additional Indian Country-focused advertising and promotional materials are under development to further leverage this existing market.
