Wednesday, January 15, 2020/Categories: Community Development Block Grant Program

An historic hotel and rural community hospital will share $1.3 million in Community Development Block Grant-Economic Development grants to create and retain jobs, the Montana Department of Commerce announced Wednesday.

Ekalaka and Carter County will receive $600,000 for Dahl Memorial Hospital to expand and purchase new medical equipment. This award will also create four jobs and retain 36. The healthcare industry is Montana’s largest sector of employment, and rural community hospitals are critical for the future of our rural economies.

“By supporting rural hospitals like Dahl Memorial to improve and grow, we can ensure quality, long-term healthcare for Montanans in their local communities,” Commerce Director Tara Rice said.

Butte-Silver Bow will receive $700,000 to renovate the historic Hotel Finlen. Built in 1924, Hotel Finlen has hosted world leaders, including U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Renovation of the hotel will create 35 new jobs.

“The Finlen is one of Montana's most storied hotels. This renovation will attract more visitors to the Finlen, improving the economic vitality of America’s second-largest Historic District, uptown Butte,” Director Rice continued. “It’s projects such as these that will help promote and strengthen Montana’s economy and local businesses’ ability to create and retain permanent good-paying jobs.”

CDBG-ED grants will be awarded to:

  • The Town of Ekalaka and Carter County: $600,000 for Dahl Memorial Hospital to purchase new medical equipment, create four new jobs and retain 36.
