Lt. Gov. Cooney, Director Rice Celebrate Newly-Renovated Affordable Homes

Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney and Commerce Director Tara Rice Tuesday joined in celebrating the grand opening of Kalispell’s Courtyard Apartments, a 32-unit newly-renovated affordable housing property.

"The successful rehabilitation of these homes is a perfect example of what happens when public-private partnerships come together to preserve existing affordable housing," said Lt. Gov. Cooney. "The Courtyard Apartments are a place that will provide safe and sustainable homes for individuals and families and will strengthen the community of Kalispell for decades to come."

Originally built in 1994, the newly-renovated Courtyard Apartments provide affordable rental housing for households earning 60 percent or less of Area Median Income, or about $28,000 for a one-person household. In addition, eight of the homes provide increased affordability for people living with long-term disabilities through Montana Housing’s 811 rental assistance program. As a result of the rehabilitation, Courtyard’s rents will remain affordable for at least another 46 years.

The Courtyard’s rehabilitation includes the installation of new flooring, appliances, cabinetry, windows, roofs, siding and other items to improve accessibility. A heat recovery ventilator was installed for indoor air quality and Energy Star appliances were also added to improve sustainability and energy efficiency. 

The Community Action Partnership of Northwest Montana (CAPNM) and Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) collaborated with Mountain Plains Equity Group to put the $4.8 million deal together with an allocation of federal housing tax credits from Commerce’s Montana Housing. 

In addition to preserving affordable housing, the renovation also created at least 64 local jobs and $2.8 million of earned wages.
