Kanduch Logging, Inc. Secures $300,000 Loan from Commerce’s Wood Products Revolving Loan Fund
Kanduch Logging bought the 15-acre Superfund site in summer 2023 from Deer Lodge County, with the intent to repurpose the land for productive use as a firewood processing facility. The shop and office headquarters for the logging, excavation and trucking enterprises will also be onsite.
The Kanduch Logging investment is a success story for Anaconda, Deer Lodge County and local citizens, as this land was previously designated a contaminated location.
This property, along with 4,000 adjacent acres, was reclaimed to meet Environment Protection Agency standards and is now being developed for industrial purposes with Kanduch Logging leading the way. The goal for the first year of production is to process truckloads of 200 beetle-killed logs, equal to 4,400 tons. The proposed purchase of the firewood processor will create the capability to process up to 600 truck loads, or 13,200 tons a year.
After the initial investment of USFS grant funds, the facility will be open five days a week, all year long, and will employ full-time staff. There is no other fully staffed firewood processing facility within 100 miles of this site. The lack of nearby facilities, coupled with the Superfund status of the land, made this proposal a high priority for funding.
This new facility is an exciting expansion for Kanduch Logging and a significant contribution to the local economy. By utilizing electric technology, the business will reduce fuel costs and increase efficiency. The installation of a new scale certified by the USFS also simplifies transactions, allowing patrons to pay for the precise amount of firewood they receive, whether loaded by the processor or by hand.
With an inventory of firewood ready for processing, this facility addresses the growing issue of deadwood in our forests and is set to create three new job positions in the Anaconda community, along with additional indirect jobs. The WPRLF loan from Commerce has been crucial in supporting the business expansion amid rising operational costs.
Kevin Kanduch, president and co-owner of Kanduch Logging, Inc, said, “This loan will dramatically increase our ability to sell firewood and continue our work cleaning up the forests.”
Commerce is proud to be a part of this journey with Kanduch Logging and looks forward to the continued shared success of this venture. If you’re interested in learning more about the WPRLF, contact Chris Ryan, our revolving loans specialist.
