Commerce Allocates Over $1.7 Million in Grant Funding to Six Coal-Impacted Communities
“This grant funding will help Colstrip and Hysham improve their local infrastructure, purchase heavy equipment for Rosebud County and Roundup and will assist with needed repairs for schools in Forsyth and Savage,” said Paul Green, Director of the Montana Department of Commerce. “At Commerce, we are proud to support the people who live in Montana’s coal-impacted areas. In the last five years, more than $14 million of Coal Board grant funding has been awarded to eight counties, six school districts, seven cities or towns and one tribe.”
The Montana Coal Board met in Billings recently to review project applications submitted by several Montana communities requesting financial support for each of the applications submitted. Board members selected the following communities and projects for funding:
- The City of Colstrip will receive $481,670 of Coal Board funding for replacement of the Cedar Street water main and $200,000 of funding for a crack sealing project.
- Forsyth Public Schools will receive $139,150 of Coal Board funding to replace heating system controls.
- The Town of Hysham will receive $350,000 of Coal Board funding for water treatment improvements.
- Rosebud County will receive $155,000 of Coal Board funding for the purchase of a loader for the landfill.
- The City of Roundup will receive $100,000 of Coal Board funding for the purchase of a new backhoe.
- Savage Public Schools will receive $281,000 of Coal Board funding for school building repairs.
The Montana Coal Board awards Coal Board Impact Grants to counties, communities, school districts, tribal governments, or other governmental units to assist them in adequately providing governmental services or facilities that are needed as a direct consequence of an increase or decrease in coal development, or in the consumption of coal by a coal-using energy complex. The Coal Impact Area Report can be found here, along with a list and a map.
The Board was created by the Legislature in 1975 and is administratively attached to the Montana Department of Commerce. For more information, visit commerce.mt.gov.
