HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Commerce announced today that 11 Montana communities will share $600,000 in grant funding to regenerate Montana Main Street Program member businesses and downtowns. The funding is provided by Commerce’s Montana Main Street Program.

“The MMS Program focuses on empowering communities to reinvigorate downtowns through locally led planning and implementation projects. Competitive grant funding and additional resources provided through MMS foster and enhance grassroots efforts, enabling communities to envision and pursue vibrant futures while protecting historic and cultural vitality,” said Commerce Director Marta Bertoglio.

The program works with local partners to identify and plan for a community’s greatest development needs and provides seed money to help implement high-impact projects.

Communities that will receive MMS grant funding:

  • The City of Boulder will receive $78,515 to upgrade the Jefferson High School sound and lighting systems.
  • The Town of Broadus will receive $45,000 to install seasonal parklets.
  • The City of Fort Benton will receive $67,000 to renovate the historic Levee Trail system along the Missouri River.
  • The City of Hardin will receive $40,000 for Phase I of a downtown wayfinding installation project.
  • The City of Havre will receive $15,000 to complete a Havre Beneath the Streets sidewalk restoration project.

  • The Town of Terry will receive $34,816 to construct the Murn Park Community Pavilion.
  • The Town of Winnett will receive $82,760 for the completion of the Petroleum County Courthouse restoration project.

In 2022, the City of Roundup received $50,000 of MMS grant funding to install wayfinding and place-making signs.

"Montana Main Street Program resources and professionals have been Roundup's most critical partner in the intentional development and preservation of our historical downtown. The Main Street team has enabled every Main Street improvement in some way through resources, advocacy or fiscal support,” said Roundup Community Partners Co-Chair Theresa Doumitt. “One project that Roundup is most grateful to have partnered with Montana Main Street on is our welcome plaza. This project was a critical action step in our downtown master plan to create an anchor development for Main Street and serve as a gateway to welcome visitors."

Currently, there are 38 Montana Main Street communities. Eligible applicants for MMS grants include MMS communities who currently do not have an active grant.

The MMS Program was established in 2005 and is administered by Commerce. Funding for the program comes from Montana Senate Bill 540.
