HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Commerce announced today that more than $400,000 in grant funding has been awarded to three Montana communities to support vital public safety and development projects in coal-impacted areas. The funding was allocated to these communities by the Montana Coal Board.

“In the last five years, more than $15 million of Coal Board grant funding has been awarded to eight counties, six school districts, eight cities or towns and one tribe,” said Montana Department of Commerce Acting Director Mandy Rambo. “Coal Board grant funding helps our coal-impacted communities with county land planning, construction and reconstruction of designated highways as well as financially supports public schools.”

These communities and projects will receive Coal Board funding:
  • Big Horn County will receive $155,620.87 for boiler and fire systems replacements at the Big Horn County Library.
  • The City of Forsyth will receive $200,000 for construction of a new water tank and installation of a booster pump.
  • The Town of Winnett will receive $50,000 for the purchase of a new dump truck.
The Montana Coal Board awards Coal Board Impact Grants to counties, communities, school districts, tribal governments or other governmental units to assist them in adequately providing governmental services or facilities that are needed as a direct consequence of an increase or decrease in coal development or in the consumption of coal by a coal-using energy complex. The Coal Impact Area Report can be found here, along with a list and a map.

In 2024, the City of Roundup received $100,000 of Coal Board funding to purchase a new backhoe. Sandra Jones, Roundup mayor said, “On behalf of the City of Roundup, we want to thank the Montana Coal Board for all the help they provide for projects in coal communities in the state. We thank you for funding our purchase of a new backhoe.”

The board was created by the Legislature in 1975 and is administratively attached to Commerce. For more information, visit commerce.mt.gov.
