About the Bale of Hay Saloon

The Bale of Hay Saloon is Montana's oldest watering hole, with roots dating back to the late 1800s. Located in the heart of Virginia City, it has long been a cornerstone of the local community and a living piece of Wild West history. The saloon features an authentic atmosphere and historic architecture and has even served as a set for classic films. Its preservation and continued operation are vital to the cultural fabric of Virginia City and to Montana's heritage tourism.

Operator Opportunity

The Montana Heritage Commission is seeking an experienced and dynamic individual or team to operate the Bale of Hay Saloon. This is an immediate opening, and applications will be reviewed as they are received; the position will remain open until filled.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background check in accordance with Montana state law
  • Eligibility to be listed on a Montana liquor license (must meet all legal requirements for licensure)
  • Demonstrated experience managing a comparable bar, restaurant or hospitality venue, including staff supervision, inventory management, customer service and compliance with health and safety standards
  • Submission of an application and cover letter detailing relevant experience and qualifications
  • Knowledge of Virginia City, the surrounding area and local history is highly desirable.
  • Local housing availability is helpful, given the seasonal and community-focused nature of the role.

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Only candidates who meet the background and licensure requirements will be considered for interviews. The opportunity will remain open until a suitable operator is selected.
