About the Montana Heritage Commission

The Montana Heritage Commission preserves and manages historic resources in Virginia City, Nevada City and Reeder's Alley, promoting the appreciation of Montana's history through high-quality visitor experiences. The commission serves as a steward for these historic sites, ensuring their preservation, interpretation and sustainable operation for the benefit and enjoyment of all.

About Our Properties

The MHC manages properties in Helena, Virginia City and Nevada City, Montana. Each of our properties is unique, and most have historic features that require careful preservation. The U.S. Department of the Interior's historic preservation standards guide our decision-making process regarding the restoration, preservation and rehabilitation of any physical structures.

How to Apply

1. Review the available properties and select the one(s) you're interested in. If the property that you are interested in is not listed below, please reach out to our team to discuss prior to submitting an application.
2. Download and complete the lease application form MHC Lease Application Form (PDF).
3. Submit your application and supporting documents via email to mhc@mt.gov.
4. The Montana Heritage Commission will review applications quarterly and contact you for next steps.

With the passage of HB 680, the Montana Heritage Commission is authorized to offer long-term leases, up to 99 years, for properties under its management to entities making substantial capital investments to the property.

Current Lease Opportunities

We are excited to offer long-term lease opportunities, up to 99 years, for select Montana Heritage Commission properties. These leases are available to individuals or entities that make substantial investments in the preservation and enhancement of these historic sites.

Nevada City Hotel

• Location: Nevada City, Montana
• Description: A historic stagecoach station featuring 14 guest rooms, including two spacious suites. This property offers a rare chance to restore and operate a landmark hotel in the heart of Montana's heritage tourism corridor.
• Needs: Foundation repair and interior renovation
• Status: Available

River of Gold Cabin and Surrounding Area

• Location: Near Nevada City, Montana
• Description: A rustic cabin set in a scenic area with significant potential for development as a campground or outdoor recreation site. The surrounding land allows for creative expansion and visitor amenities.

Susan Marr House

• Location: Virginia City, Montana
• Description: A historically significant residence requiring substantial structural repair or rebuild. This property is ideal for those interested in a major preservation project with rich heritage value.
